Atlanta HBCU Alumni 5K Shows Why Wellness, Legacy & Community Belong Together

At Atlanta HBCU Alliance Alumni 5K Run/Walk We Dance, Run, Walk, & Party-Walk For Good

Highlight

The Atlanta HBCU Alumni 5K Run/Walk brought families, runners, walkers, alumni, Divine Nine members, entrepreneurs, corporate partners, and future college students together for a powerful morning of wellness, HBCU pride, and community connection in Atlanta on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

Context

Some events are bigger than the race clock.

The Atlanta HBCU Alumni 5K is one of those events.

Held in Atlanta, Georgia, the annual Run/Walk is rooted in a mission that reaches far beyond the finish line: “Run For You, Run For Them, Run For Us.” The event is presented through the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance, Inc., a nonprofit community-based organization committed to alumni support, student enrichment, and community engagement.

At its core, the race is about improving the health and well-being of our communities while celebrating the excellence and impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

And that mission was easy to feel.

From the moment families arrived, the energy was upbeat, warm, and unmistakably HBCU. Runners and walkers came ready to move, but the morning also offered something much bigger: a near full-family experience wrapped in wellness, culture, nature, education, entrepreneurship, and community pride.

One of the most beautiful things about the HBCU Alumni 5K is that it creates a real-life college fair atmosphere without feeling formal or stiff. Children and teens can walk from tent to tent, meet alumni and students from different HBCUs, pick up information, ask questions, and see the joy that comes from choosing a school that can feel like family. For parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, and mentors, it is an easy and meaningful way to introduce young people to HBCU culture in action.

This is not just “go read a brochure” energy.

This is line dancing near the tents.

Divine Nine members party walking between announcements.

Alumni chapters showing school spirit.

Families cheering each other on.

Wellness vendors sharing resources.

And a professional stage helping anchor the whole morning with music, announcements, and celebration.

The vendor market also showed the power of community investment. Entrepreneurs and corporate allies showed up in a way that put real dollars and visibility behind Black health, HBCU excellence, and community wellness. A sponsor board recognized CareSource as title sponsor, with additional support from partners including Coca-Cola United, Major League Baseball, Noble Clay, VyStar Credit Union, Retool Your School, Grady, Atlanta Life Insurance Company, Anheuser-Busch, LexisNexis, Race Roster, Hibbett, Trader Joe’s, and more.

That kind of support matters.

Because the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance’s work is rooted in health, hunger awareness, and higher education. The organization highlights the reality that health disparities continue to impact African American communities in serious ways, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Their programming encourages regular exercise, proper nutrition, awareness, prevention, and community-based solutions.

The race course itself is also meaningful for runners. According to the organizers, the 5K route is USATF certified, which gives serious runners a quality race experience while still keeping the event accessible and welcoming for walkers, families, and first-time participants.

But the real win may be what happens after the race.

The post-race experience feels like a health fair, HBCU tailgate, family reunion, and outdoor community celebration all in one. You can see children watching their parents and grandparents prioritize wellness. You can see alumni proudly representing their schools. You can see vendors offering tools and resources for better living. And you can feel the kind of collective joy that tends to show up whenever HBCU culture is in the building.

The Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance also reminds the community why these institutions matter. HBCUs continue to generate billions in economic impact, support thousands of jobs, produce a major share of Black STEM graduates, and help prepare leaders across law, education, engineering, public service, business, health, and beyond.

So yes, this is a 5K.

But it is also a morning where Black health, higher education, and community love move together.

It is an A-plus event for families, runners, walkers, students, alumni, and anyone who wants to experience the kind of joy that happens when people gather with purpose.
